Jewellery Care
Cleaning and Inspection
Our jewellery is built to last, and it will last even longer with proper care. As well as taking care when wearing your jewellery, make sure it's properly cleaned, repaired, stored and packaged.
It's a good idea to get your jewellery cleaned professionally. Not only does it keep your jewellery looking its best, it also means a trained professional will be looking it over at least once a year, which means any wear or damage can be spotted early. However, between professional cleanings, you can also do certain things yourself to keep your jewellery clean.
Wearing Jewellery
Wearing jewellery sounds very simple, but there are a few things you can do to protect and care for your jewellery as you wear it. For example, only put it on after applying makeup, perfume and hairspray. And try to handle gems and pearls as little as possible, as the oils from your skin can build up and gradually dull the stone.
Make sure you take your jewellery off if you're going to do any manual labour, including housework. Bracelets are easily broken or bent if they catch on anything, and even diamonds can chip or crack if they're knocked against a hard surface. Harsh cleaning solvents can also damage all kinds of jewellery, especially pearls.
If you wear earrings, it's usually best to remove them at the hairdressers, so the stylist's comb won't catch them. And never wear pearl earrings or necklaces if you're having your hair coloured: some colouring agents contain alcohol and other chemicals that can damage the sheen of pearls.
Also, think about wearing your bracelets or watch on the wrist opposite your lead hand. (So if you're right-handed, wear them on your left.) Because you use that hand less, the jewellery is kept more out of harm's way.
Storing Your Jewellery
Jewellery isn't only vulnerable while it's being worn. It can also be damaged if it isn't stored properly. You might think it's impossible to scratch a diamond - the hardest substance on earth. But of course a diamond can scratch another diamond, as well as damaging softer stones, gold, and even platinum.
So it's important to make sure your jewellery is kept safely separated. Wrap individual pieces in tissue or cloth, or put them in separate compartments in a jewellery box. You need to be especially careful with pearls, which are soft and will scratch more easily than gems and metals.
Our jewellery comes in a special box. Don't throw these away - they're the best way to store or package your jewellery, and will protect it from damage and dirt.
